The job
You’ll operate a range of conventional buses on York Region Transit routes and schedules, and on charters when required. You’ll collect fares, answer riders’ questions about transit and look after the safety of everyone on board.
Every day is different, so flexibility matters. What doesn’t change is the standard: attentiveness, good judgment, safe driving and professional service for every rider.
What you need
Upgrades from a G licence to a BZ aren’t done during our training, so you need your BZ before you apply.
- A valid BZ driver’s licence in good standing
- A clean driver’s abstract and commercial vehicle operator’s registration
- Legal entitlement to work in Canada
- Grade 12 education or equivalent
- Strong spoken and written English, and excellent customer service skills
- Willingness to work split shifts, nights and weekends on a rotating basis
- Reliable transportation to and from work

- Revenue service training
- First aid, public relations, accessibility and workplace violence prevention
Think about the schedule before you apply
Buses run 7 days a week, 365 days a year, and so do operators.
You’ll work weekends and holidays, and a mix of split shifts, day shifts and night shifts. Your days off may not be consecutive or the same each week. Shift work affects your personal life, so please weigh it seriously.
The road brings its own challenges: weather, construction, traffic and the occasional difficult rider. Service depends on operators being on time, every time.
Physical demands
The job involves sitting for long periods; gripping, reaching and turning the steering wheel; turning your head and neck; fine finger movements on the farebox keypad; and good concentration, visual acuity and colour vision to judge distances safely.
