This plan outlines the policies and actions Miller Transit Limited will put in place to improve opportunities for people with disabilities.
Statement of commitment
Miller Transit is committed to treating all people in a way that allows them to maintain their dignity and independence. We believe in integration and equal opportunity. We are committed to meeting the needs of people with disabilities in a timely manner, by preventing and removing barriers to accessibility and meeting the accessibility requirements of the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act.
Accessible emergency information
Miller Transit is committed to providing customers and clients with publicly available emergency information in an accessible way on request. We also provide employees with disabilities with individualized emergency response information when necessary.
Training
Miller Transit provides training to employees, volunteers and other staff on Ontario’s accessibility laws and on the Human Rights Code as it relates to people with disabilities, in a way that best suits their duties. We:
- provide ongoing training to all employees, volunteers and other staff through online, in-person and self-directed materials
- maintain a training plan so that all staff receive ongoing training, and include our policies and training materials in our orientation package
Information and communications
Miller Transit is committed to meeting the communication needs of people with disabilities, and consults with people with disabilities to determine their information and communication needs. We:
- train our content editors and website administrators on the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG)
- make our websites and their content conform with WCAG 2.0, Level AA, working with our web developers and online accessibility tools to find and fix problems
- make all publicly available information accessible on request, working with the person to meet their needs within a reasonable time
- make our feedback processes accessible on request, and encourage feedback about our accessibility, including customer service, our website and our employment practices
Employment
Miller Transit is committed to fair and accessible employment practices. We:
- tell the public and staff that accommodation is available for people with disabilities during recruitment and assessment, and when people are hired
- check that hiring managers tell candidates accommodation is available throughout the interview process
- develop individual accommodation plans and return-to-work policies with employees who have been absent due to a disability, provide the plans in accessible formats, and keep them private
- take employees’ accessibility needs into account in performance management, career development and redeployment, for example by providing performance plans in large print or reading them aloud, and by adjusting accommodation plans with the employee for a new role or promotion
