About Miller Transit

Since 1984 we’ve delivered public transit operations and maintenance for York Region. Today our team runs York Region Transit service in Markham, Richmond Hill and Stouffville from our head office and garage in Richmond Hill.

Our contract with York Region

Miller Transit works under a long-term contract with the Regional Municipality of York. In 2022 the Region awarded us its South-East Transit Division, which covers conventional routes, community buses and Viva bus rapid transit.

The Region owns the buses and is responsible for scheduling, routing and timing. We take full responsibility for operating and maintaining the fleet to the Region’s standards, and for supplying everything the service needs: drivers, route inspectors, mechanics, dispatchers, driver trainers, the shop and its equipment, wash bays and parking.

The fleet covers a broad range of makes, models and sizes, and every bus is a low-floor, wheelchair-accessible model.

Training that goes beyond the licence

Our operators are among the best-trained in Canada. New hires receive more than 320 hours of instruction from our five MTO-certified trainers, on top of the training it takes to earn a bus licence. Every operator then completes at least 16 hours of training and professional development each year.

Our trainers built these programs to complement those of the Canadian Urban Transit Association (CUTA), including its Transit Ambassador program. We’ve found that well-trained, fairly treated people run a safer, more reliable system, and riders notice.

A full-service garage

We operate a full-service bus garage staffed by licensed technicians, apprentices, lube technicians and housekeeping staff. Maintenance and repair of the Region’s fleet is our responsibility from end to end.

Maintenance and repair

Scheduled maintenance, repairs and inspections keep every bus safe and ready for service.

Fare systems

We maintain and repair the Region’s GFI farebox system, deposit fareboxes into a secure vault and provide regular accountability reports.

Clean buses

Cleaners and detailers work through the fleet so riders board a clean bus.

340 people, one priority

Our team includes vehicle operators, mechanics, dispatchers, operator trainers, inspectors, planners, human resources specialists, cleaners and detailers.

The priority we share is the safety and satisfaction of our riders: students on their way to class, workers commuting to their jobs, seniors heading to appointments and parents out with their kids.
